Ms. Shao, XiaoZheng, Chair Professor at School of Ethnology and Sociology, Central University for Nationalities of China, founder of the embroidery major and full professor at the College of Archaeology and Museology under the Cultural Relic Society of China, Senior Artist of China, Member of China Arts and Crafts Society, Member of Collectors Association of China, President of Shanlin Art and Painting Institute.

Founded in 1996, the Shanlin Chinese Traditional Arts Studio has a unique role: To train students to the highest technical standard of Chinese art hand embroidery, kesi with Chinese painting. No other organisation teaches these techniques of Asian art-silk-antiques, to this level.

Keeping Chinese art hand embroidery skills alive is vital. Without these skills we would not be able to conserve textiles, which are amongst the most fragile objects of our heritage. For example, Song Dynasties Art Embroidery, Gu Embroidery in Ming Dynasties, Song Dynasties Silk tapestry with cut designs and so on.

Shanlinarts-taught embroiderers are also able to create the heirlooms of tomorrow - do Asian art-silk-antiques reproduction and repair for all the museums and collectors in the world.

The Shanlinarts owns an extensive Collection of 150 objects comprising both textiles and archival papers. The textiles include pieces created by the Shanlinarts workroom and examples of different techniques through history, while the archive helps to tell the story of the Shanlinarts.

These projects are incredibly valuable to our Apprentices and students for teaching purposes. However, it costs a great deal to conserve and keep these objects.

Altogether it costs around $20, 000 a month to run the Shanlinarts, yet we receive no government funding and have to rely on our own resources, especially donations.

The Friends and Special Supporters of the Shanlinarts make a vital contribution, supporting Apprentices and our Collection. Without this funding we would not be able to continue our work.

By becoming a Friend or Special Supporter you can help us to continue our work.
